Start by measuring across the loaf where you want to cut, then compare that distance with the knife's usable cutting edge. Leave room for a controlled stroke and for the handle to clear the loaf. A framed or guided slicer also needs enough space around the bread, so its overall length won't tell you whether it fits.

A wide, low boule can need different clearance from a tall, narrow loaf of the same weight. That's why one knife size won't suit every large sourdough loaf.

## Measure the cut you actually want

Place your cooled loaf on its cutting board. Decide whether you want full-width slices, shorter half-loaf slices, or thick pieces to serve with soup. Measure across the loaf where the blade will pass, including the widest part of a round loaf.

With the knife set aside, measure the loaf's height too. A frame or guide needs to clear both its width and height.

If you're asking about fit, send a photo of the loaf beside a ruler and explain the kind of slice you want. That gives more useful information than "a large loaf." A cut across the middle of a boule covers a different span from a slice taken from one half.

## Compare cutting length, not handle-to-tip length

Conventional bread knives often list blade length separately from total length. As a general reference, [bread-knife selection guidance](https://www.victorinox.com/en-GB/How-to-Choose-a-Bread-Knife/cms/how-to-choose-a-bread-knife/) places everyday blades at 21 to 26 cm, roughly 8 to 10 inches, and notes that larger loaves can benefit from more blade length. You'll still need to check that the blade fits your loaf.

Bread Pilot's listed 15.8-inch length measures the whole tool, including the parts beyond the cutting edge. It does not mean you get a 15.8-inch blade. The 1/4-inch to 2-inch adjustment range tells you how thick a slice can be; it doesn't tell you the maximum loaf width or height.

For a particularly large loaf, ask [support](mailto:hello@keecheehome.com) to confirm usable blade length and relevant frame clearance before choosing the slicer. Do not estimate those measurements from a photograph.

## Use a fit checklist

| Check | What you need to establish |
| --- | --- |
| Intended cut width | The span the edge must travel across |
| Usable cutting edge | The blade measurement, excluding the handle and non-cutting parts |
| Loaf height | Whether a frame or guide will obstruct the intended cut |
| Working space | Room for the handle and a controlled stroke on your board |
| Hand position | A stable grip that keeps fingers outside the blade's travel |
| Storage | Space for the complete tool with its edge protected |
Ask for any measurements missing from the listing. Even a knife sold for sourdough may not fit your particular boule.

## When full-width slices are awkward

You may prefer to divide a cooled boule into smaller portions before making sandwich slices. Use a suitable knife for that initial cut, and keep the loaf stable. Our [sourdough cutting guide](https://bread-pilot.com/how-to-cut-sourdough-bread/) covers choosing between full slices and portions from a divided loaf.

If the bread blocks a framed slicer's movement, stop rather than forcing it through. You can work with smaller portions if they suit your meal, or use another knife with enough confirmed clearance. It's fine to make the preliminary cuts with a different knife before using a guide for repeated slices.

## Common questions

### Is a longer bread knife always better?

No. You still need to control the knife and have room to move it. Check the whole tool against your board and your grip before choosing extra blade length.

### Does a thickness guide make a knife fit a wider loaf?

No. Thickness adjustment and loaf clearance are separate measurements. The guide sets the distance between cuts; it does not extend the blade.

### Can I choose by loaf weight?

Measure the loaf and the cut you plan to make. Two loaves can weigh the same and have very different widths, so weight alone won't tell you which knife fits.

Once fit is confirmed, use the [slice thickness guide](https://bread-pilot.com/bread-slice-thickness-guide/) to plan your portions, or [see Bread Pilot's setup](https://bread-pilot.com/#how-it-works).
